Works by: Hidenori Mitsue
Concepts like the imagination, the recognisable and unrecognisable are starting points for Japanese artist Hidenori Mitsue from which to engage in experiments with perception. In his work he finds new meanings to everyday subjects and events. Mitsue combines this with the abstract, thus creating a renewed irrational relation. Recognisable symbols and images leave their usual context and are at the centre stage of the new situation.
Duality is a major aspect of Mitsue's work. His cultural and social background as well as influences from the Western world are present in his paintings. This notion of duality also speaks in his use of colours. With powerful colours he will contrast a quiet set of colours; or he will combine thickly applied paint textures with delicately painted subjects.

PASCAL ROUSSON : SOLO PROJECT AT ART AMSTERDAM STAND 203
AS PART OF THE NO HOLDS BARRED PROGRAMME

Pascal Rousson’s ‘MUSEO DE LA MUERTE’ is an installation which can be perceived as a compilation, representing the random findings of a caveman in his chaotic behaviour: a collection of found objects that a primitive human being saw as means of bringing value to his existence and,
most importantly, to make more sense of the world. Rousson refers to Basquiat, Cézanne, Watteau, Decamps and others. Rousson is fascinated by the obscenity and provocation art can create. The notion of death often plays on the artist’s mind and is apparent in his references to the lives of
Jackson Pollock and Ernest Hemingway.

dr. julius | ap - The New Concrete and Architecture
dr. julius | ap is Berlin’s only gallery which presents concrete, non-representational, geometric and reductive art exclusively. Its program consists of eight exhibitions per year. Moreover, we have an additional focus on architecture, showing at least one exhibition annually related to architectural photography. Thus, we refer back to common concepts of the 1920s modernist movement and their topicality and relevance in 21st century art, which we refer to as The New Concrete.

Works by: Esther Tielemans, Kirsten Geisler, Moyna Flannigan, Broersen & Lukács (Persijn & Margit Broersen & Lukács)
We are happy to invite you to 'Artificial Worlds' at Art Amsterdam, booth 146. We will show works by Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács, Kirsten Geisler, Moyna Flannigan and Esther Tielemans.

The work of Persijn Broersen (1974, Delft) and Margit Lukács (1973, Amsterdam) is characterized by a quest for the sources of contemporary visual culture. With intricate layers of depersonalization, re-mediation and re-interpretation they demonstrate how reality, (mass)media and fiction are strongly intertwined in contemporary society. At Art Amsterdam they will show their new animation 'Time And Again', a lily decaying and blooming at the same time. The flower appears as white light on the wall. An arabesque that is not bound to time and space, fixed in an eternal now.
Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács have had show at a.o.: World Expo Sjanghai, Muhka Antwerp and at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Upcoming: July 2011 their film 'Mastering Bambi' will be shown at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Since the mid-1990s Kirsten Geisler (1949, Berlin) has been working on the representation of the three-dimensional body in a virtual space and with the construction and manipulation of beauty. In Geisler's works the virtual person is a symbol for the reflection of our dreams: young, beautiful, slender, normal, healthy, and of course, never aging. At Art Amsterdam Geisler will show the first virtual birth of her creation Maya Brush, a full-size virtual beauty.
Recent exhibitions of Kirsten Geisler include: NIMK Amsterdam, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artas Buenos Aires, Chelsea Art Museum New York and Gemeente Museum Den Haag.

Moyna Flannigan (1963, Kirkcaldy) is one of Scotland’s most distinguished painters. Flannigan’s work is concerned with the human figure. It is based on sharp observation, a wry awareness of the human condition, its absurdities and tragedies, and a deep knowledge of the comic tradition of character types. Her newest work has been raised to a more mythic, dream-like level and also show a new choice in media: Flannigan will show new drawings, but also her first sculpture at Art Amsterdam.
Moyna Flannigan's works has been shown at a.o. : National Gallery Scotland Edinburgh, The Andy Warhol Museum Pittsburgh, Royal Academy of Arts London and Scottish National Portrait Gallery Edinburgh.

Prix de Rome winner Esther Tielemans (1976, Helmond) paints panels as of they were props, full of colour, hanging on the wall, lying on the floor or hanging loose in space. The visitor is enabled to wander trough the abstract landscape she creates. Tielemans draws attention to the visual quality of concentration, sensation, relation, attraction and repulsion, and places these in the world as if it were a stage. Where power and sensation often commit in a battle for attention in our visual culture, Tielemans manages to merge them together.
Esther Tielemans' work have been shown at a.o.: Museum van Bommel van Dam Venlo, Kunstverein Leverkusen, Van Abbe Museum Edinhoven, Galerie Zurcher Paris and Galerie Zurcher New York.
